5 Effective and affordable sunblock that are good for the ocean
We get it, you don’t want to hurt the ocean. But, to shell out $40 for a single tube of sunblock isn’t cool. Here are the cheapest reef-safe sunscreen brands we could find that are friendly for your skin, your wallet and the world. Word of advice: if it’s too cheap, it’s too expensive – as in, they’re not legit. You get what you pay for, right?
To protect yourself and the environment, avoid sunscreen with these chemicals:
Butylparaben, octinoxate, octocrylene, PABA, triclosan and 4-methylbenzylidene camphor. Check the ingredients and remember that when it comes to something you’re smattering all over your skin (the body’s largest organ) oxybenzone is the worst of all time. That’s right, oxybenzone is the WOAT.
In the past three years, ⅕ of the world’s reef has died off. No reef means no lobsters and no lobsters means no lobsterin’ and that ain’t right.
Ok, let’s get to it. First up is this funky monkey:
The fact that an 8 fl oz bottle lasts so long due to the long-lasting formula, is one of the reasons why Sun Bum is so great. Not only is the price on point, but they’re reef-friendly, paraban and PABA free, waterproof for up to 80 minutes and smells heckin’ great.
For easy application, we love the Sun Bum Face Stick – which can be used on arms, legs torso, and even your bum for those cheeky bottom babes.
Not only does this sunblock have all the good stuff and none of the bad stuff, but the ultimate bright-side is the price tag.
This sunblock is thick with a pleasant smell, it’s a little greasy due to all the natural ingredients. It’s a good moisturizer and doesn’t have to be applied too often. It will go on a bit white, but the paler you are the less you’ll notice. If you’re looking for a trustworthy sunscreen, don’t think twice about it (pun totally intended).
Although it’s only .5 oz, this stick glides on easily and a little goes a long way. 80 minutes of water-resistant protection makes it ideal for sports and water enthusiasts. Best part is: It goes on clear and rubs in easy.
It does go on white and it is a little pasty but at least you can pronounce the ingredients. Don’t be fooled by the size of the bottle – one mom said that just one bottle lasted her over 5 days of beach and pool with multiple kiddos. Not bad for under 10 bucks.
